O, 77, took home the Golden Globe for outstanding supporting actor in a television series for his depiction as Oh II-nam, commonly known as The Host or Player 001, being the first South Korean to do so.

He beat out more well-known contenders such as Billy Crudup and Kieran Culkin, who were nominated for their roles in The Morning Show and Succession, respectively.

After many performers, directors, and studios refused to attend due to allegations that the ceremony’s organizer, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, lacked appropriate ethics policies and ethnic diversity, this year’s ceremony was held privately without the customary lavish pomp.

“For the first time after receiving the news, I reminded myself, ‘You’re a kind man,'” O stated in a statement issued by Netflix.

“It’s no longer about us in relation to the world; it’s about the world in relation to us. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank I wish you a lovely life.”

Squid Game, a dystopian drama in which cash-strapped participants compete to win 45.6 billion won ($38.1 million) by playing childhood games with terrible repercussions, became a worldwide sensation and Netflix’s biggest original series premiere.

In the nine-part series, O pretended to be a feeble, innocent old man before revealing his actual identity as the games’ sinister mastermind.

In South Korea, the dystopian drama has sparked a slew of real-world recreations and social media memes, including his use of the phrase “kkanbu,” which roughly translates as “friend,” boosting his celebrity as a hippy “kkanbu grandfather.”
